Each month, our sales team puts the spotlight on a specific machine within the UNTHA range. This time, it’s the turn of the UNTHA RS150 metal shredder. Learn more about the features, uses and benefits of this shredding technology in this short Q&A  with Gary Moore…

  • Describe this machine in one paragraph

Expertly designed for extreme, heavy duty or high volume metal shredding, the RS150 is a machine with capabilities unlike no other in the marketplace.

  • How exactly does the shredding process work?

This really is a great feat of engineering. Three of my top features are as follows:

  1. Like all of our four shaft shredders, the cutting concept and screens guarantee utmost particle homogeneity, even when tackling high volumes and/or large, cumbersome materials. This equates to maximum output recyclate quality which supports great revenue yield for the operator.
  2. The shredder is supplied with the dynamic, flexible and energy-efficient UNTHA Torque Drive – dynamic energy-saving technology allows operators to adjust the shredder cutting speed and torque, whilst allowing the cutters to frequently reverse without causing machine damage. The result is unrivalled throughputs without excessive wear or power consumption.
  3. There are varied protection mechanisms to prevent machine damage, even when shredding the toughest of metal wastes. This means maximum uptime with minimal maintenance and/or costly repairs.

It also has a safe and easy-to-use control panel with remote diagnostics available from UNTHA’s HQ, to ensure uninterrupted operation. The list of features and benefits could go on and on.

  • What makes it ideal for shredding metals?

It is the largest and most powerful four shaft shredder in UNTHA’s range – even those simple words alone give some indication of what the UNTHA RS150 is capable of.

The technology has been engineered specifically for extreme applications where operators require very high throughputs, low operating costs and high availability. It satisfies all of the requirements that these recyclers could ever have.

  • What types of metal wastes can it handle?

Varied difficult applications ranging from metal drums and barrels, to non-ferrous scrap, car bodies, bulky WEEE, cables and more! There’s literally nothing that the RS150 will not process – even down to mattresses and hazardous waste!

  • What particle size can it achieve?

A homogenous fraction as small as 40mm.

  • And at what throughput rates?

Because this shredder can handle such a variety applications, throughput rates are dependent on material, operator requirements and in-feed methodologies.

  • Describe an ideal maintenance regime

Whenever we install a shredder, we train our clients’ staff to use the machine in the safest and most efficient way possible. Within this training we outline recommended cleaning and maintenance regimes, and the frequency with which these tasks should be carried out. Like all  our shredders, the RS150 has been designed for quick, easy and safe maintenance with minimal disruption, so customers needn’t fear the process will be time-consuming or costly. And we all know the benefits of planned preventative maintenance (my colleague Roger authored a blog on the subject if there are any doubts!)

Sometimes clients utilise their own in-house engineering expertise for maintenance, whilst other times they rely on the input or complete direction of our customer support team.

Also, an interesting fact, is that the cutters on the RS150 can be refurbished! Not everyone knows this – a factsheet is available in our guides & advice section for anyone interested in learning more.

  • How important is regular servicing for this machine?

Regular servicing is important for any shredder, regardless of the robustness of its construction or the features it contains to help prevent wear. A shredder is like a car – treat it well and maintain its upkeep, and it will prove to be a high-performing asset long into the future.

Servicing can also help identify seemingly minor things that can be addressed quickly and easily with minimal disruption or cost, before they mount into more complex maintenance challenges.

  • Describe a stand-out project/client that has made innovative use of this shredder?

Having been personally involved in this project, I would have to say LKM Recycling, a renowned waste management firm that is using the technology to maximise materials recovery and revenue generation.

  • What is the cost bracket?

As the largest four shaft shredder in our range, it’s obviously not the cheapest, but I would say it’s the only machine on the market that can dependably handle the metal shredding challenges we’ve outlined above, whilst still achieving a great ROI for the operator.

  • Is finance available?

Yes, finance is available on all of our machines. Clients can even choose to include a customer support package, with servicing, maintenance and parts, for maximum cost control.

Our aim is to devise a flexible agreement that suits all budgets. But of course, clients can purchase the machine outright if that’s their preference.

  • Is it possible to arrange a trial/see the UNTHA RS150 in action?

Absolutely – we encourage people to send us a quick summary of their shredding scenario and we can set this up for them. Please see our ‘book a trial’ page for more info!
