UNTHA UK’s managing director Marcus Brew will take to the ‘stage’ at an upcoming CIWM event, when delegates gather to understand the implications of the EU referendum.

The Closing Debate: The EU, the UK and the Environment, will be the final session at the two day Resourcing the Future 2016 event, hosted by the CIWM, ESA and the Resource Association. Chaired by Joan Walley from Aldersgate Group, this panel-style discussion will see a number of industry spokespeople share their views about one of the UK’s most talked-about topics – Brexit.

Marcus is one of seven panellists who will examine the role that the EU plays in driving robust environmental policy and legislation in the UK, before considering the potential impact of Brexit and how the steps the industry can take to prepare for the possible repercussions.

He is no stranger to the topic, having appeared on the BBC Breakfast Show to discuss his ‘stay’ vote earlier in the year. He has since been interviewed by The Business Desk on the same subject and has contributed to a piece authored by UNTHA UK chairman Chris Oldfield, which is due to appear in MRW magazine over the coming weeks.

Commenting on the matter, Marcus said: “Nobody can say, with any absolute certainty, what will happen following the nation’s vote on 23rd June. But, party politics aside, I will absolutely be supporting David Cameron’s campaign for the UK to maintain its EU status. I’ve been very vocal on the reasons why, in the interviews I’ve held to date and I look forward to the debate and interaction unfolding at this CIWM event.

“As a profession we need to look at the challenges and opportunities that our progressive industry will face, as a result of the referendum, and make plans, together, to ensure we enter the future with strategic direction and drive.”

The two day Resourcing the Future 2016 event – which will take place at the Royal College of Surgeons, London – looks set to attract more than 300 senior recycling and waste management professionals. Further information – including details of how to register and a full programme – can be found on the CIWM website.

The debate, in which Marcus is participating, will form part of the closing sessions on June 15th, from 14:00-15:15. Fellow panellists include David Palmer-Jones, FEAD president; Neil Grundon, deputy chairman of Grundon Waste Management; Angus Evers from the UK Environmental Law Association; and Stephen Tindale, a climate and energy policy consultant. Mary Creagh, chair of the Environmental Audit Committee and London Mayoral candidate Zac Goldsmith MP, have also been invited to participate.
