Each month, our sales team puts the spotlight on a specific machine within the UNTHA range. This time, it’s the turn of the UNTHA RS40 shredder, a relatively compact yet robust machine perfect for secure product destruction. Learn more about the features, uses and benefits of this shredding technology in this short series of questions answered by MD Marcus Brew…
- Describe this machine in one paragraph
A compact yet robust machine with low wear, high availability and homogenous throughout, which ensures a cost-efficient, dependable and precise shred for secure product destruction.
- How exactly does the shredding process work?
The RS40 is ideal for light-medium volumes of secure product destruction. With four shaft shredding technology it guarantees a precisely defined particle size for utmost compliance and optimum downstream recycling. How? By drawing classified materials into the cutting system, then pre-shredding and re-shredding them in one single process. A configurable screen then regulates the particle sizing, in line with our customer requirements. If the waste doesn’t automatically fall through the screen, it passes through a secondary cutting process before being fed back into the main shredding operation. This means a high quality shred for even the most secure products.
- What makes it ideal for shredding secure products?
In addition to the functionality described above, the slow speed of the RS40 helps to regulate the shred quality whilst better protecting the machine from foreign objects and unnecessary wear. Competitors’ single shaft equivalents operate at a far higher RPM to achieve the same output levels, but this can put needless pressure on the process increasing the risk of fire through the production of dust and heat. Costly maintenance is therefore required more frequently and the integrity of the end fraction can be compromised. This is not ideal when the robustness of the product destruction is so important.
- What types of secure products can it handle?
‘Secure product destruction’ can mean different things to different customers. It could include faulty or end-of-line branded merchandise which an organisation does not want to appear on the black market, for instance, as well as production waste, packaging waste, confidential documents, uniforms, bank notes, hard drives and more.
- What particle size can it achieve?
The RS40 can achieve particles as small as 15mm, with sizing regulated by the operator’s chosen screen.
- And at what throughput rates?
Everything depends on the individual application at hand but many of our clients achieve throughputs of 2 tonnes per hour.
- Describe an ideal maintenance regime
We’ve thought carefully about ‘ease-of-maintenance by design’, with every shredder in the RS series. The RS40 therefore boasts an integrated electronic shut down when it encounters unshreddable items, there’s an integrated central lubrication system for uninterrupted shredding, maintenance-free mechanical seals which don’t suffer from dust ingress, oil level monitoring, a quick change cutting system, an operator diagnostics panel… the list goes on. Everything is designed to ensure the ongoing operation is straightforward and seamless, and that any maintenance is quick, easy and safe.
However, we do recommend clients take a proactive approach to machine servicing. We can therefore carry out – or help customers devise – a planned preventative maintenance programme to ensure minimal downtime or disruption, long into the future.
- How important is regular servicing for this machine?
As with any capital asset, routine inspections and servicing will help identify problems before they arise, as well as uncovering ways to tweak and optimise performance. Again, we can train clients’ operators to conduct these inspections themselves, or we can provide such support as part of one of our shredder service packages.
- Is finance available?
Yes. Clients can either buy the RS40 outright or our UK partners can structure an affordable finance deal to spread the cost over a term to suit them – there’s more details of the savings benefits on our finance page.
- Is it possible to arrange a trial/see the RS40 in action?
Yes, we’ve got an RS40 at our state-of-the-art test centre in North Yorkshire, just next to the M1 motorway. This gives existing and prospective clients easy access to this shredder, before they make an investment. ‘The proof is in the pudding’ as the saying goes, so industry operators are invited to trial the equipment using their own materials. We’ve also installed these machines for clients throughout the country (and overseas too!) so there are plenty of opportunities to see the RS40 in action!
