This month, Andy Mackay, service engineer at UNTHA UK is put under the spotlight. Find out which is his favourite shredder, what his role entails, and how he ‘relaxes’ on a weekend…
Name: Andy Mackay
Job title: Service Engineer
What does your role entail?
As a service engineer, my role involves travelling up and down the country, installing, servicing, repairing and optimising the full range of UNTHA machinery. I particularly love putting my electrical engineering experience to good use in this varied role.
How long have you been with the company?
Six months exactly – and it has absolutely flown by!
What’s the best thing about your job?
I love doing the installation work most of all. I like starting with a clean slate, then standing back at the end of a job, admiring the finished piece of work, and seeing a happy customer.
For you, which is UNTHA’s stand-out shredder?
For me it’s the LR1400 pallet shredder, which can actually be used for wood of various forms. These machines are very robust, and long lasting. I recently saw one in action at our test centre, where heavy duty tree stumps were shredded with ease. I wasn’t sure how it would manage the task – but it made mincemeat of them!
Which is your favourite UNTHA project?
Installing a static XR shredder for a waste management specialist, in Dartford. I spent a couple of days working on this, and I loved the varied electrical and hydraulic work involved.
What’s been your biggest work achievement, since joining UNTHA?
Four months into my role, in December, I single-handedly installed a VR120 in Whirlowdale, Rotherham. When I arrived at the site the machine was in the middle of the floor, but integrate it in to the rest of the plant. It was my first full installation, and I was proud of the finished system.
Describe UNTHA in three words:
Reliable, innovative and friendly.
And finally some more light-hearted questions:
What’s your favourite food?
Mexican – essentially anything spicy! And I love chocolate.
How do you relax on a weekend?
Mountain biking, indoor rock climbing, weightlifting and doing Wing Chun Kung Fu.
If you were stranded on a desert island, what is the one thing you couldn’t live without?
My iPod, equipped with lots of rock music (including Linkin Park, 3 Doors Down & Breaking Benjamin).
