Wood recycling has been an important 2018 focus for industrial shredder manufacturer UNTHA UK, with the launch of the QR causing ripples throughout the skip, warehousing and logistics sector. But as the business looks ahead to 2019, the R&D doesn’t look set to stop there. Our MD, Marcus Brew, recently offered his thoughts to Skip Hire magazine about this very topic, so if you missed the original article, you can catch up here…
The team’s newest machine was engineered to tackle various waste materials, but its pallet shredding capabilities has attracted significant attention this year. Developed in conjunction with waste handlers around the world, operators have seen this high throughput, low maintenance technology process up to 30m³ per hour with industry-changing results.
“The goal was to achieve trouble-free waste wood shredding, recycling and biomass production,” comments UNTHA UK’s managing director Marcus Brew. “The single-shaft machine can therefore produce high-quality fraction for wood chip, biomass or briquetting, but ease-of-configurability guarantees maximum application flexibility for what can often be a challenging business environment.”
Key features of the QR include integrated gears, low wear parts and maintenance-free pusher technology for maximum yield and uptime; large chambers and greater drive power for increased throughputs; and an interchangeable screen with 12-100mm diameter options for fraction homogeneity. Variable drive configurations also help to ensure optimum outputs.
“We’re committed to solving industry problems, sometimes before they’ve even been identified by waste handlers,” continues Marcus. “The environmental landscape is complex and often volatile. The low maintenance design means less headaches and increased uptime, which is especially important for operators with a keen eye on productivity, performance and profitability.”
But keen to be renowned for manufacturing next generation wood/biomass shredders, UNTHA’s efforts in this sector have not ceased there.
Further engineering developments within the XR series means this waste shredder – available as either a static or mobile machine – guarantees defined biomass product quality. A P63 specification is achievable in a single pass, for example, and with 50% reduced energy consumption thanks to the revolutionary UNTHA Eco Drive.
“Wood recyclers and biomass fuel producers are demanding more from their systems, and rightly so,” explains Marcus. “And this is only going to continue as we head into 2019.
“A client in Germany, for instance, approached UNTHA looking for throughputs of 35 tonnes of ‘waste’ wood per hour, plus a homogenous particle size of <120mm. Securing this volume and quality of fraction in a single pass – i.e. with only one machine – would limit the capital investment required and accelerate the payback period.
“Also seeking to minimise their net environmental impact, they sought an electric-drive. With a 1.4MW photovoltaic system installed on site, they knew that using only 60% of the system’s energy generation, they could power the entire waste plant, including the shredder. Avoiding the purchase of additional, unnecessary fuel would therefore make the investment even more economical.
“More organisations in the wood arena need to be thinking about the operational, environmental and fiscal benefits they want to achieve, as technology now exists to help them reach these goals.”
