Marcus Brew, Managing Director at UNTHA UK recently appeared in a new and exclusive feature for The Yorkshire Times, where a regional business professional is put in the hot seat and given 10 minutes to answer 10 burning questions. If you missed the article, you can catch it in full here…
What does a typical working day for you involve?
I’m still a hands-on member of the team and love getting involved with everything from complex client enquiries to the ongoing refurbishment of our North Yorkshire HQ. However, overall, I am responsible for the strategic direction of the company, the continued progression of my colleagues and the provision of a forward-thinking working environment which benefits clients and staff alike.
What makes your company special?
Purchasing any large capital equipment can be a daunting task for even the most experienced of companies. Our specialist team has the experience and know-how to ensure that our customers receive the highest quality equipment, built specifically to solve their problems and help them generate revenue in line with their business plans.
Do you have any business rules that you swear by?
Always surround yourself with the best people as they will ensure the success of any business.
Do you dress up or down for work?
We operate predominantly in the waste and recycling markets so it’s rare that I have chance to wear a suit these days, although this doesn’t mean that I dress down! Let’s just say that wearing easy-clean clothing is a must.
What piece of advice would you give to your 18-year-old self?
Embrace your mistakes and take them for the opportunities that they present. It all amounts to experience that means you can go on to find a solution in a calm and measured way.
What’s your favourite Yorkshire venue for an event or team away day?
We had a fantastic night a Bibi’s in Leeds at Christmas. I’d highly recommend it for a team or family meal.
How do you prefer to travel for business?
I wouldn’t say that there’s any particularly good way to travel these days – an increasingly active business environment means lots more commuters! However, if you have time to travel on A-roads, the car is still my preferred way to travel – I do enjoy driving through parts of the UK that I haven’t seen before.
What’s your favourite place in Yorkshire to relax?
Brimham Rocks – a fantastic National Trust destination in Yorkshire.
Where is your favourite place to eat in Yorkshire, and what dish do you recommend?
I eat out at a lot of restaurants and find Yorkshire one of the best places in the UK to find an excellent meal. It’s hard to pick a favourite actually, but any fish dish will always be my first choice.
What do you miss most about Yorkshire when you are away?
The people. If you are lonely in Yorkshire you’re doing something wrong.
