In this month’s employee Q&A, we chat to Caroline Brown – UNTHA’s HR manager – about her responsibilities, the best part of her job, and her dream client…
Name: Caroline Brown
Job title: HR manager
Summarise your role
As UNTHA UK’s HR Manager, my role is extremely varied. I’m responsible for advising all current members of staff on employment matters, as well as developing our workforce policies and procedures. I’m also naturally involved in the recruitment and selection of any new employees.
In addition, I oversee our quality, environment and health and safety management systems, to ensure ongoing compliance with the three ISO standards we currently hold certification for: 9001, 14001 and 18001.
What’s your favourite part of the job?
The variety, as no day is ever the same. And also the people – they’re a nice bunch!
Which one word would your colleagues use to describe you?
Honest
What does it take to be a great shredder partner?
The ability to provide high quality, precision-engineered products – coupled with the expert technical knowledge surrounding them – and be responsive to the needs of customers.
If one of your shredders could win an award, which would be most worthy?
I’d have to pick two! Firstly, the ever-reliable four shaft RS series, of which the biggest in the range – the RS100 and RS150 – can comfortably handle extreme metal shredding. Secondly, our new QR machines, which I only saw in action for the first time a few weeks ago. They chewed up some (extremely awkward-looking) rigid plastic drums with complete ease. Very impressive!
The phone rings and it’s your dream client… who would it be?
Well, do you think Daniel Craig has any shredding requirements…?
Describe your most satisfying shredder sale/installation to date (machine & application)
I’m not directly involved in the sales or projects of the business, but it is very satisfying to know that whatever the team take on, I – along with my colleagues – have helped to ensure that they are highly trained to do a fantastic job. On top of this, any subcontractors and suppliers will have been carefully selected, the projects will be well-managed and – most importantly – our customers will always receive the highest standards of service from us.
UNTHA has received particular praise for its customer support services in recent months – why are these so important for clients in the modern waste and recycling industry?
An UNTHA shredder is a significant investment for any customer, so they undoubtedly want a guarantee that they will be supported for the duration of a relationship. This involves being provided with access to not only parts, but also to our team of skilled engineers, for any service and maintenance requirements. Finally, they may require technical support and advice – both over the phone and remotely – from the manufacturers based in Austria.
What are your hopes for UNTHA in the coming year?
That we continue to build upon the extensive internal process improvements we have put in place over the last few years, to ensure doing business with UNTHA is even slicker.
What is the biggest challenge facing the industry over the next 12 months?
Navigating the outcome of Brexit – whether hard or soft – will certainly be the biggest challenge we all face.
