UNTHA Employee Q&A – Ben Styles

In the latest instalment of our new employee Q&A, senior service engineer Ben Styles tells us a bit more about himself. Find out what his role entails, the word his colleagues would use to describe him, and his favourite project to date…

Name: Ben Styles

Job title: Senior service engineer

Summarise your role in one paragraph

As the senior service engineer here at UNTHA, my role encompasses a variety of elements. These include: the installation and commissioning of our shredders, maintenance of the machines, and the provision of support to our customers, both new and existing. In addition, I deliver operator training on the use of our shredding technology.

What’s your favourite part of the job?

If I had to choose one section, I’d have to say providing customer support. To hold the knowledge to solve any client issues which may arise, and resolve them remotely and speedily, is probably one of the most challenging aspects of my job, but also extremely rewarding.

Which one word would your colleagues use to describe you?

Bengineer!

What does it take to be a great shredder partner?

The single – and MOST important – quality which cements a great partnership between UNTHA and our customers is honesty. We really need customers to tell us exactly what they want from us, and by the same token it is hugely important for us to share with them what we are capable of providing. Get this one simple feat achieved, et voila! A strong and effective partnership is born.

If one of your shredders could win an award, which would be most worthy?

This is a difficult question! I’d have to have a ceremony, as each of the shredders would win an individual category:

Longevity – the RS

Best wood shredder for small businesses – the LR

Quietest mobile shredder – the XR

Best aesthetic design – the TR

But for me, the overall winner would be the RS40!

The phone rings and it’s your dream client… who would it be?

“Hi, it’s Jeremy Clarkson – I’d like to shred bits of caravans, what do you recommend?”

Describe your most satisfying shredder sale/installation to date (machine & application)

The current installation of an XR3000C at a recycling and resource management depot. This has been an incredibly challenging project for the team, with long hours, hidden costs, and high expectations from the customer. But I’m pleased to say that we’ve achieved (and in fact surpassed) the standards set out every step of the way, and this has cemented a positive working relationship with the client.

UNTHA has received particular praise for its customer support services in recent months – why are these so important for clients in the modern waste and recycling industry?

Many people in business use the ‘new car’ analogy when it comes to customer support. This is quite apt, as it puts you in the shoes of your customer, asking questions such as: What do I get if I buy this? What performance will I experience? How does it compare against other models? Is there any warranty offered? What are the costs of servicing and parts? These are the exact questions you or I would be asking when signing on the dotted line for a brand new vehicle purchase. As a result, at UNTHA we strive to assist the customer right through the purchase experience, including the transition into aftersales, to ensure they will always get the support they deserve.

What are your hopes for UNTHA in the coming year?

I would like to see sales of the XR continue to grow. In relation to the QR – our ‘new kid on the block’ – I will watch with interest over the coming months the performance of this recent machine, which is a natural evolution from the LR and VR range, with a hint of the MR range in its design.

What is the biggest challenge facing the industry over the next 12 months?

I’m sure everyone says the same, but Brexit continues to be a concern. We already have a strong infrastructure in place to ensure we don’t lose our solid working relationship with our parent company in Austria, but elsewhere in industry I know there are a number of concerns surrounding European trade, the value of the pound and so on.  Let’s hope our Government do the right thing in this situation.
